Outdated electrical wiring can cause a range of problems.
That could be day-to-day inconvenience from a lack of socket outlets or sockets mounted too low in skirting boards. Or it can be a genuine safety concern from poor workmanship, no earthing conductors on lighting circuits or outmoded VIR (rubber cables).
As you might expect, rewiring a property is no walk in the park. To start with, it requires a good understanding of the BS 7671 Electrical Wiring Regulations Guide. And unlike other home improvement jobs, it has an impact on all floors and rooms.
Let’s be clear – if you’re looking for a partial or a full house rewiring, an amateur job won’t cut it. From replacing back boxes on switches and sockets to running new electrical cables through the property, rewiring involves a series of extremely challenging processes.
Our frequently asked questions…
Yes, There is something called an EICR (Electrical installation Condition Report). This will pick up on any issues that require attention before you purchase, leaving you less likely to be out of pocket at a later date.
The best way to find out if your house needs a rewire is to have an electrician undertake an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report). Also a couple of common signs a house is around that time to start thinking about rewiring. The sockets are mounted in the skirting board. There is a lack of socket outlets throughout the house. An old looking fuse board & signs of DIY, or poor workmanship.
Yes a rewire can be undertaken whilst occupied. The rewire will just take a little longer than if the property was empty. Here at CRE, we have all the grinding equipment with vacuum attachments to save on dust and mess, which is ideal for an occupied rewire. There will still be dust and mess as you can imagine, but with the correct equipment this is considerably less!
Surface mounted rewires save on dust and mess. This is due to not having to cut out lines of plaster in the walls to sink the cables. Surface mounted is not the best option unless options are limited. Surface mounted does not look pleasing on the eye as most of the installation will be in plastic trunking.
When looking for a contractor to undertake the rewire, there’s a few things to look for! Choose a company that is registered with a competent person scheme like NICEIC, Stroma Or NAPIT to name a few. References/reviews are always a great sign of a good contractor. Be weary of a Quotation that’s too cheap or an electrician that can start straight away. Often when somethings sounds too good to be true, it usually is!
