Many people reading this article will be unfamiliar with RCD protection and what it is so this article will begin by explaining how it could be a lifesaver. RCD, which is also known as a residual current device will shut down the power if there is any fault present and could help to prevent a major accident or fire from occurring.

Different Types of RCD

There are three different types of RCD protection: fixed, socket outlet and portable. Fixed RCDs will be fitted into the fuse box, socket outlet residual current devices will take the place of a standard socket, while portable RCDs can be plugged into a socket outlet, and an appliance such as a kettle or hairdryer can then be plugged into it.

How RCD Works

As electricalsafetyfirst.org.uk explains, RCD protection works by detecting the currency that flows through a circuit. If it detects a problem with the flow of the current or if somebody accidentally comes into contact with a livewire, the circuit will be shut down.

Why it is Important

RCD protection is vital for many reasons. First of all, an electrical fault could ultimately lead to a fire, endangering your home and risking lives. However, with RCD protection in place any fault with be detected early and it will help to prevent this from happening.

Another occasion when RCD protection can be invaluable is when someone is using electrical equipment either in the bathroom or the garden. It is not uncommon for electric shocks to happen when a person cuts into a cable when mowing the lawn or if an electrical appliance that is kept the bathroom is exposed to water. However, with RCD protection in place the device or lawn mower would automatically shut down thus helping to prevent an electric shock.

RCD is essential for anyone carrying out electrical work at home or as part of their job. Should an individual become exposed to a livewire the RCD protector will detect this and shut it down for their safety; this could help to prevent a fatal accident.

An RCD protector can be especially important for older homes. Often, old fuse boxes do not come with RCD protection, which can leave the home more vulnerable to a fire or an electric shock if something should go wrong. If this is the case in your household or your commercial business, then it is a good idea to get the fuse box replaced with a fitted RCD.
